How to Apply Natural Looking False eyelashes

I'll just get out there and say it: I'm a crazy eyelash person. Over the years, i've tried nearly all of the products on the market to get longer, thicker and darker lashes. I also had a nearly 10 year long obsession relationship with falsies where I would apply them every single day and trick people into thinking they were real. It's funny because during this time I met one of my good friends (another fellow eyelash psycho) and we literally bonded through our sneaky, daily application of falsies. Aren't girls weird sometimes?

The quick and easy method I'm about to demonstrate gives you a lot of bang for your buck and it's virtually undetectable. Only one eyelash strip is used at a time, which leaves the other available for use at a later date. It's far easier than applying those annoying little individual eyelashes and it concentrates the lash thickness in the outer corner of your eyes, giving an elongated, sexy cat eye appearance. I don't wear fake eyelashes on a daily basis anymore, but when I want to add little oomph to my makeup for special occasions or trick people into thinking I have the eyelashes of a baby llama, here's what I do...

Ardell eyelashes

Ardell eyelashes application

This is How You Do It

Start by trying NOT to get that Montell Jordan song 'This Is How You Do It' stuck in your head, thanks to my header here, har har (sorry for the worst jokes ever I'm really working on that)

  1. Choose a natural looking, wispy false eyelash such as the Ardell Natural Lashes in 110.
  2. Grab and prep one eyelash strip by taking it and cutting it in half. Make sure to remove any of the clear glue bits that come attached to it.
  3. Apply a small strip of latex based eyelash glue* at the base of the lashes and allow it to get tacky for about 10 seconds.
  4. Gently place the lash strip on the base of your lashes with the longer end of the lashes outwards towards the corners of your eye. Line up the end of the lashes with the end of your natural lash line. I find it's easier going at a downwards angle instead of straight on so the glue-y strip doesn't collide with your real lashes. If you screw up, you can just remove the lashes, wipe the glue away with a damp q-tip and try again! Otherwise, if you miss the mark a little, wait until the glue is nearly dry and gently pinch them with your actual eyelashes to scootch them closer together.
  5. Once you've placed those lashes on the outer half of your eyes and allowed them to dry for a couple of minutes, apply mascara as you normally would to blend the falsies and your eyelashes together. This helps the false eyelashes look the same as yours with mascara. That's it! You're all done!

*A quick word on eyelash glue... I really like the latex ones like Duo, or Ardell because they dry soft and tacky, unlike a lot of the other clear kind. They don't pull out my lashes when it comes time to remove them, it washes off easily and holds all day! I find that the clear/white glues are best because they dry clear, unlike the black variety which shows off an obvious black glue line.

You can see exactly how they sit here, thanks to the white glue line. Don't worry! It became clear a few minutes later after it dried completely!

Once you're ready to remove the eyelashes, gently grab the corner of the false eyelash and just lift it up from a corner. It won't hurt at all, I promise! I don't recommend sleeping in them since they'll get all crunched up and fall off onto your pillow and look like spider legs the next morning. This is bad because it'll not only FREAK your half asleep self out (totally done this), but you also can't reuse the eyelashes because they'll be super wonky and gross.

Isn't it crazy how much little strips of eyelid hair can change an entire face? What do you think about my tips? Would you try this yourself in the future or have you done something similar in the past? Thanks for reading!

  1. Great tips! I've never seen people apply them this way before either, so I'm definitely going to give it a try the next time I apply falsies. I've only just started getting into fake eyelashes but so far I REALLY like them, and they make my eyes look so pretty, haha. Thanks for the tips :)

    1. Isn't it crazy how much of a difference falsies can make? I haven't worn them in ages and whipped them out to do this post and now I'm addicted again! Which eyelashes are your favorite right now? I've been wanting to do some of those super fancy dramatic ones they have at Mac and Sephora right now! Let me know what you think of this method if you decide to try it :)

  3. Rachel, you are too adorable in the last picture! I only ever wear false lashes for special occasions because I don't think they are made to fit my eye shape or something! hahaha! They always end up feeling to scratchy or heavy and I wanna just rip them off my eyes! I'll have to give this method a go!! x

    1. You are too kind!! I always have to post a "goofy" one so it's not all serious faces haha. Glad you like it :) I feel the same way! It's so hard to get the entire band to fit your eye and the sharp ends always get pokey somewhere. I love doing this method because you can't see the thick band and it's not so obvious. I'm all about illusions! Let me know how it goes if you try it! It takes some practice but I think you'll like how lightweight it is :)

  4. So glad I read this! Thank you for sharing!! I always want longer lashes but extensions always seems to pull my natural lashes out when they fall off :( I will have to give this method a try! I like that you just take them off after. Usually I suck at applying falsies but this look slightly easier haha

    1. Yay! I'm so glad you like it! Oh my gosh I haven't even tried extensions before! I feel like those get soo expensive to get nice, natural and thick ones and i'm afraid they would make my lashes fall out! I think those are great on special occasions like a beach vacation/honeymoon where you don't want to wear a lot of makeup. Let me know if you decide to try this method! It takes a little practice but it's super light and manageable :) Hope you're having a good day so far Shannon!

  5. Lashes really make or break a look, but even with knowing that I rarely apply them. They are just so much hassle, plus i am incredibly worried they are going to be falling off my face mid-day. And what a look would that be? But I will apply some today, just because you look so lovely and natural and I want to be a copy-cat...

    1. Haha!! I know I stopped wearing them regularly because I would sometimes get wild and they would end up in my hair. Friends would be like "oh, you have a bug in your hair... what is that?" and it would just be a strip of falsies :-X Yay! Let me know how the application goes! Thanks for reading Anne :)

  6. Ohh, every time I read a post about falsies I get so jealous! I'm a contact lenses wearer so I can't really wear fake eyelashes. I know some people still do it but I just wouldn't feel comfortable! I wish I could wear them, though, they look so gorgeous and instantly make your eyes look bigger! x
